Parliamentary democracy in Canada continues to be destroyed

December 17, 2008 by David Purchase

I am greatly disturbed both by the political follies in Ottawa and by the lack of understanding about parliamentary democracy exhibited by many citizens.
The root cause of both our political crisis and our public misunderstanding of it is the growth of presidential politics within a parliamentary system of government. Steven Harper was not elected by the people of Canada. They have not given him any mandate to govern.

My opinions are very similar to David’s. I believe the days of Majority Governments are gone forever because of our three and a half Party System and vote splitting. The day has arrived for Parliamentary Reform.  The first-to-the-post system does not represent the wishes of ALL the people. Representation by Popular Vote would be much better.  A “Prime Minister” elected by all the people of Canada should insure that he/she does have a mandate to govern and it should be for a fixed term (4 years?).  Fixed terms for the MPs would also be set at 4 years. Lastly, an Elected Senate would be far superior to the system of today, appointments by Nepotism, Patronage, and Political Partisanship.   Accountability should also be a top priority on the Menu but with our current system there is no benefit in trying to accomplish anything. A lot to ask for, yes, but I think our country deserves better then what we have today!
